Vendicari – Nature Reserve

During our “Creative Holidays” we’ll spend half a day in this beautiful nature reserve:

Located along Sicily’s Ionian coast south of Siracusa between Noto and Marzamemi, Vendicari is Europe’s southernmost marshland, a protected reserve covering an extensive area. There are some old structures in the area, such as a late-medieval watch tower and ancient Greek and Roman archaeological sites, but since 1984 building has been prohibited on the private property bordering the preserve. Vendicari is great for hiking and exploring, and there’s also a beach. For the most part, the terrain consists of marshes and lagoons.

Among the animal life is the wild hare, an occasional fox, pond turtle, hedgehogs, various frogs, owls, black cormorants and a great number of local and migratory birds, particularly various ducks, herons, flamingos, marsh harriers and storks, for which Vendicari is a breeding ground.

” We must be smart to come to Ibla, a certain quality of mind, taste for tuffs silent and burning, the dead ends, the turns useless, shutters sealed a look of black light.”(Gesualdo Bufalino)

Ragusa, the ancient city which is spread wide as the offshoot big new part of Dubrovnik. It is located in the eastern part of the city, on a hill that goes from 385 to 440 m above sea level.

After the earthquake of 1693, the ancient city of Ragusa was rebuilt by implementing shipyards that produced works, buildings and monuments of late Baroque style. In it are as many as 14 of the 18 monuments of the city of Dubrovnik today enrolled in the World Heritage Site.
The wonderful old town contains over fifty churches and palaces in the Baroque style. In the far east, there is the Giardino Ibleo and there are also the ruins of the ancient city, called Hybla.

Noto

The eight towns in south-eastern Sicily: Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo, Ragusa and Scicli, were all rebuilt after 1693 on or beside towns existing at the time of the earthquake which took place in that year. They represent a considerable collective undertaking, successfully carried out at a high level of architectural and artistic achievement. Keeping within the late Baroque style of the day, they also depict distinctive innovations in town planning and urban building.
Noto is on two levels, an upper part on the plateau and a lower, newer part on the slope below. The latter accommodates the buildings of the nobility and the religious complexes of the 18th century, the topography, town plan and architecture combining to create a spectacular ‘Baroque stage set’. It includes nine religious complexes and numerous buildings.

Monoprinting with Angela Matera

Monoprinting is a form of printmaking that has images or lines that can only be made once, unlike most printmaking, where there are multiple originals.

There are many techniques of monoprinting.

Monoprints are known as the most painterly method among the printmaking techniques; it is essentially a printed painting. The characteristic of this method is that no two prints are alike. The beauty of this medium is also in its spontaneity and its combination of printmaking, painting and drawing media.
